Need some help on this, Guys
Abner Womack's grave Stone info. posted states he was Rev. War soldier. He was
born Feb. 10, 1769. The Rev. War was from 1775 until 1883, if I remember my
history the war was all but over before the 1883 date. Nearly all units were
released before that date. So Abner would have been 14 at the most. Not many 14
year old boys served as fighters but some did as Fiffers and Drummers. My
question is, does anyone out there have other info on this, maybe through DAR or
a list of soldiers serving. Mull this over and lets see what comes out.
Jack
Mrs James Henry Womack.
Mrs James Henry Womack was Miss Harriet Mariah Gregory and was born in
Platteville, Wisconsin, December 15, 1846.
Her parents, LeRoy and Lucinda Gregory, lived near the corner of Elm and Cedar
Streets and it was there her early days were spent.
Her schooling was received in the Brick School.
July 20,1863 she was united in marriage to Mr. James Henry Womack and their
family life was lived on the farm in what was called Stumptown, Wisconsin.
There during the Pastorate of the Rev.Homer W. Carter, both Mr. and Mrs. Womack
joined the Stumptown Congregationl Church.
For many years Mrs Womack was active member of the Womack's Relief Corps.
About 15 years ago Mr.J.H. Womack Suffered a stroke of paralysis and during the
years of his sickness Mrs Womack was his faithful and efficient nurse.
Mr. Womack passed to his reward in May 1926.
Mrs. Womack has failed slowly since being alone. She has been faithful cared by
her children whose only reward was to know that mother was comfortable.
She fell asleep Friday morning, August 29,1930 at the age of 83years,8 months
and 14 days.
She leaves to mourn their loss, three children, John William Womack of Montfort,
Wisconsin, and Charles Henry Womack of Platteville, Wisconsin and Mrs James
(Martha Ellen)Beavers of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The funeral service was conducted Sunday afternoon, by Robert F. Merritt the
Pastor of the Congregational Church and the remains were placed at the side of
her husband in the Greenwood Cemetery, Platteville, Wisconsin.
At Greenwood sweetly sleeping,
Where the flowers gently wave,
Lies one we loved so dearly,
In her silent lonely grave.
Peaceful be your sleep, Dear Mother;
It is sweet to breath your Name;
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we do the same.
Your Children.
CARDS OF THANKS
We desire to thank all those who have aided us during the long sickness of our
Mother, and also express our appreciation to those who tried to comfort us at
her passing away.
The James Henry Womack Family.
Jack!!
Ahem!! uh check yer dates that was one dang long war wasnt it??
Jack. Not saying it is so in this case but if I had a buck for every posthumous stone erroneously claiming RW status in my lineage I'd be a rich man. David.
Sam. Meant to add this in my previous. Do you think the RW status is real? David.
Sam, Sure goofed on that one, guess I failed history didn't I, naw, typing.
Am searching for information on Rev. N.(Nathan?) W. Womack born in Alabama 4/28/1854. He married L.E.(?)in Mississippi on 2/10/1878. N. W. was reared in middle Tennessee, educated in Ohio and licensed to preach in Paragould, Arkansas on 9/22/1891. N.W.(Nathan?) died 1/11/1919. N.W. and Mrs. L.E. William Womack m. Caroline T. Children: Julia, Sarah, William, James, Zachary Taylor, Joseph, Louella, Carrie, Fannie & Robert. My greatgrandfather is Zachary. Any help in locating last name for mother or where married. Lived in Schley County, GA in 1860 & 70.
Seeking ANY information about:
Catherine "Katie" WAMAX, b. 30 June 1897 in Cherry Valley or
Hedgesville, Berkeley Co., WV to parents Jesse & Mary WAMAX. She d. 8 Nov.
1921 in Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., WV, of peritonitis. She was buried 10 Nov.
1921 in Green Hill Cemetery, East Burke St., Martinsburg (1st Ave., Lot #23).
The Berkeley Co. courthouse records show that she was divorced at the time of
her death [from Albert ELLIS], that she was born in Hedgesville on 30 January
1897 [not June], and her mothers name is listed as WAMIX (we all know how
variable this name can be). The informant for this record was one William Hill.
The 1910 Berkeley Co. census of Hedgesville, District 18, taken 4 May, shows
that Jesse "Jess" WAMAX was 43 yrs. old, b. in VA (as were both his
parents), and worked as a railroad hand. He was married to Mary for 24 yrs.,
during which time they had 9 children, with 5 living at the time of the census
taking. Mary was 48 yrs. old, and was b. in WV (as were her parents). Living
with them is their son, William, age 13, and dau. Catherine, age 10 [later known
as "Katie", the person in question here].
Further queries in the Berkeley Co. courthouse records finds a Nettie WOMAX b.
19 July 1899 to Jesse & Mary WOMAX of Hedgesville, WV.
The 1920 Berkeley Co. census of Martinsburg, District 33, taken 10 Jan., shows
Katie ELLIS & her son Carl living with Albert & Martha HILL. Katie was
listed as 22 yrs. old, married, and working as a knitter at the knitting mill.
Both her parents are shown as being born in WV.
If you have any information about Catherine "Katie" WAMAX ELLIS, or
anyone else mentioned here, please don't hesitate to contact me. This is one of
our proverbial brick walls. Katie is my boyfriend's grandmother. She was very
young when she died, and she left behind a son who spent his entire young life
on a work farm in WV. He died never knowing where his mother was buried, nor
anything about her family. Gary (the bf) and I are very interested in learning
more about his grandmother and her family.
Many thanks.
~Brandie
ps. also found at the courthouse, which could help someone else but can't tie
into our line yet, was a Cora WOMIX, b. 31 Nov. 1881 in Berkeley Co. to John F.
and Rebecca J. WOMIX. A cemetery book shows Cora, dau. of J.F. & B.
["Becky"?] WOMAX, d. 17 Feb. 1889 (listed as age 6 yrs., 3 mons. 17
days) and is buried at Little Georgetown Methodist Cemetery.
I am looking for info on a John Dee Womack, son of Archer Preston Womack and Nora Ermin Compton, born after 1907, Springfield, Missouri. I have heard he married twice, once to Lida Brazeal and once to Bessie Stark, also on his sister, Ona Womack, born after 1914, I think. John Dee and Ona are brother and sister to Mary Womack, who married George Buckner King. Any help would be appreciated.
I am looking for any info on Gary Dee Womack and his sister Ona, children of Archer Preston Womack and Nora Ermin Compton, both born after 1907, in Greene Co., Missouri, I think. Any help would be appreciated.

Oh Lord its hard to be humble when military rank and erroneous shadows of the
DAR are presented - but if people glory in that sorta thang, oh well they will
wake up someday --
Anyway, for what it is worth, am moving from present location to another -
e-mail will remain same etc -- getting set up for retirement in a few years-
need breathing spell -- may be a lil off net for a week or so mebbe two to give
all a breather -- but...... when I come back on..........aint heeres chuckie,
tis heeerresss SAM!!
Hi Beckett,
We have grandparents in common. I thought maybe someone with more
information especially regarding your questions might respond. The
following is what I have on Elijah Hunt Vasser and Mary H. Womack.
Elijah and Mary were married in Halifax Co VA 27 December 1819.
Mary H. Womack's father, William Watson Womack was married three times.
First marriage: Mary Logan 07 August 1792 in Halifax Co VA, second
marriage: Nancy Dismukes 22 February 1798 in Halifax Co VA, third
marriage: Susannah Lovelace 05 November 1832 in Halifax Co VA.
Notes for Elijah and Mary with caution that I am not sure the data is
for the same Elijah and Mary Vasser:
1812-Elijah Vasser, Private, in Major Woodford's Squadron, Cavalry, VA.
1812-Elijah Vasser, Trooper, in 1 Reg't Cavalry.
1819-Elijah Vasser marries Mary H. Womack.
1820-Elijah Vasser listed in North Carolina Census in Northampton Co.
I don't believe this is our Elijah Vasser because of other Vasser names
listed in same census as being unfamilar to me as Halifax Co VA Vassers.
1830-Elijah Vasser listed in Halifax Co VA Census and in his household is
the following:
Males Females
5-10=2 under 5=2
20-30=1 5-10=1
30-40=1 20-30=1
Can't determine Elijah's age range because of two adult males in HH.
This places Mary H. (Womack) Vasser born between 1800-1810.
1840-E. H. Vasser listed in Limestone Co AL Census with the following
in his HH:
Males Females
under 5=1 under 5=1
10 <15=1 5 <10=1
15 <20=2 10 <15=1
40 <50=2 15 <20=1
40 <50=1
E. H. Vasser born between 1790-1800.
Adult female born between 1791-1800.
1850-Mary H. Vasser listed in Western Division, Monroe Co MS Census
with the following in HH.
534-534- Mary H. Vasser 46 Female $6000 Born VA
-Ann E. Vasser 17 Female Born VA School
-Elija Vasser 12 Male Born VA School
-Virginia Vasser 10 Female Born AL School
-Martha Vasser 8 Female Born AL School
-William H. Vasser 28 Male Gentleman Born VA
-Agness W. Sims 23 Female Born VA
-Joseph A. Sims 2 Male Born MS
-?George [or] [?Genss] R. Vasser 21 Male Gentleman in the County Born VA
Note: In the HH just above Mary H. Vasser in HH #533 a George W. Vasser
is listed last in that HH, he is age 24 male Physician Born VA.
Mary H. Vasser listed as age 46 in 1850 census which places her
born about 1804.
1876-By Oct 1876 Mary H. Vasser is listed as deceased in court papers
concerning the division of her father's estate in Halifax Co VA.
Hope this helps some.
